VOVINAM and the way to Asia
"We practice foreign martial art" in elite sport arena is not new in Vietnam sport. It is our dream, that in the future, on official international sports field, "foreigners" will practice Vietnamese martial art, which is the wish of Vietnamese martial art professors. The dream will become reality when Vietnam hosts the 3rd Asian Indoor Games in 2009, the Games that excludes sports of the Olympic and Asian Games. Previously, Vovinam created a clear lobby for more stable steps as founding Vietnam Vovinam Federation (October, 2007).

Thanks to the development of Vovinam movement inside the country and abroad, at the end of September, 2008, International Vovinam Federation (IVF) - now changed to World Vovinam Federation (WVVF), the highest administrative and governing association with 39 members, including 13 executive members, was founded. WVVF now officially runs all activities of international Vovinam and, as the same time, speed up developing progress of the martial art.
In the 3rd Asian Indoor Games, Vovinam is one of competition sports with 14 events (6 sparing and 8 kata for men and women). However, it is necessary to establish Asian Vovinam Federation (AVVF), together with some relevant actions, in order to turn Vovinam to be an official competition sport in the Games. In addition, the formation of AVVF will make it more convenient to expand and develop Vovinam in Asia, which is a cradle of world martial art, to provide opportunities for less popular sport to identify talents to compete in the 3rd Asian Indoor Games.
Vovinam fans are very happy to know that AVF was successfully founded in Tehran (Iran) in mid February this year, with the participation of 17 countries in the continent, including Brunei, Laos, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam, the 5 South East Asian countries. At the first meeting of the AVF executive Board, Chairman M. Nouhi, presented a plan to develop Vovinam in the near future, including some training courses for coaches. The most important work at the meeting was the approval to host the Asian Vovinam Championship in Tehran by 2010.
For 70 years of founding and maturing, Vovinam has been developing and expanding to many parts of the world and becoming to be a popular martial art to the people. It is considered to be a philosophy of human culture and sportsmanship. The 3rd Asian Indoor Games is one important launching pad for its development.
